The main aim and raison d'être of CITIZENSHIP AND FREEDOM is to promote democratic culture in Basque society. The unusual fact that it happens to be made up of a group of citizens who have taken the decision to promote civic culture which legitimises democracy in one part of Europe is due to the fact that the Basque institutions are characterized by not having done so; on the contrary, they are devoted to constantly delegitimising democratic values, laws and institutions.

We promote democratic culture, on the one hand, by organizing public acts which may create commitment to basic laws of coexistence (the Statute of Autonomy and the Constitution) and to the democratic institutions and, on the other hand, by creating a system of symbols which may be used as a democratic reference point, recovering the memory of democratic culture and disseminating democratic values by means of lectures and publications, etc.
